When a project calls for scale, standard nursery pots don’t cut it. Extra-large planters are used to anchor apartment building entries, define outdoor dining areas, soften rooftop terraces, and bring mature greenery to spaces where in-ground planting isn’t possible. There’s no single industry-wide cutoff, but in practice, extra-large planters are those built to hold semi-mature to mature trees, dense hedging, or multiple large shrubs — typically starting around 600mm in height or width and scaling up from there. At Sigma Planters, most of our sales come from planters over 200 litres, and demand skews heavily toward trough (rectangular) shapes. These dimensions matter because they change almost every other decision in the buying process: material choice, weight, drainage design, and how the planter gets from the delivery truck to its final position.
Material choice matters more at large sizes than small ones, because the trade-offs compound.
Fibreglass is the lightest option relative to its strength, which makes it the default choice for rooftop installations, balconies, and any application where structural load limits are a real constraint. It also holds fine surface detail and colour far better than traditional concrete, which matters when a planter sits somewhere it’s meant to be seen — building entries, hotel forecourts, retail frontages. Lightweight concrete (GRC) gives a heavier, more grounded aesthetic than fibreglass, while matching it on weight — making it just as suitable for rooftop and elevated installations as it is for at-grade commercial and residential projects. Both materials come backed by a 3-year warranty — an important detail for builders, since they’re putting their name to a product the client will live with long after handover, and it needs to last.
Weight is the single most common reason a large planter project gets delayed or redesigned mid-way through. A planter that looks right on a landscape plan can exceed a rooftop’s point-load rating once it’s filled with soil, plants, and drainage media.

Drainage becomes more complex, not less, as planter size increases. A large planter holds a much bigger volume of growing media, which means more water retention, more root mass, and a higher risk of waterlogging if drainage isn’t engineered correctly from the outset. Once a planter reaches extra-large dimensions, moving it becomes a logistics problem of its own — especially on sites with limited access or multi-storey delivery requirements. Trough (rectangular) planters are the most common configuration for large-scale projects, largely because they work well for defining edges, screening, and linear plantings along building frontages or dining areas.
