Tall Trough Planters & Tall Planter Boxes

Planted to maturity, a run of tall trough planters forms a living screen 1.8–2.5m high without footings or fixings. Unlike fixed screening, the layout can be reconfigured, relocated or extended as a tenancy or floor plan changes. That flexibility is why tall troughs are routinely specified for multi-residential, hospitality and commercial fit-outs.

Specifier note: Tall troughs are frequently specified to meet council privacy-screening and landscaping conditions. Confirm the required screen height and placement with your council or certifier, and for apartments, your body corporate.

With most sizes just 350–450mm wide, tall troughs are well suited to narrow tall planter box applications: side passages, along boundary fences, between columns and on balconies where floor space is at a premium. The extra depth also holds more root volume than a shallow trough of the same footprint, supporting larger screening species and reducing watering frequency. For the tallest profile, the 1000mm Manhattan, Milano and Mykonos troughs are our extra tall planter boxes. Where you need greater length, Manhattan and Milano extend to 1200 and 1500mm.

What should go in the bottom of a tall planter box?
Nothing that impedes drainage. Our tall troughs stand on built-in feet with reinforced pre-drilled drainage holes, so a drainage layer is optional. To reduce soil volume, weight and cost, fill the lower section with lightweight filler such as sealed polystyrene or empty upturned pots beneath a layer of geotextile fabric. Most screening species need 400–500mm of potting mix, not the full depth.

How much does a tall trough weigh when filled?
Empty weights range from 10.5kg (700mm) to 24kg (1000mm). Filled with saturated potting mix, a 1000mm trough weighs approximately 320kg, and an 800mm trough approximately 200kg. Lightweight filler reduces this considerably. For balconies and rooftops, provide filled weights to your structural engineer.

Which height is best for privacy screening?
A 900 or 1000mm trough planted with a 1.2–1.5m specimen gives immediate screening at seated and standing eye level. The 700 and 800mm heights suit lower partitions and dining areas, or locations where weight is the constraint.

Can tall troughs be used indoors?
Yes. Plug the drainage holes with a waterproof epoxy putty such as Selleys Knead-It Aqua. Use a free-draining mix and water sparingly, as there is no outflow.
