Sigma Planters has spent years supplying garden pots and planters to landscapers, builders, architects, and property owners across Australia — and somewhere along the way, we picked up a lot of practical knowledge about growing things in containers. This blog is where we put it to use.
You'll find two broad kinds of content here. The first is horticultural: species-by-species guides on what actually thrives in a pot in Australian conditions — native trees, flowering climbers, screening plants, edibles — written from real growing experience rather than generic advice lifted from a Northern Hemisphere gardening book. Australian conditions are genuinely different, from the humidity of a Brisbane summer to the salt air off a Sydney balcony to Melbourne's four-seasons-in-a-day unpredictability, and a lot of standard container-gardening advice simply doesn't hold up once you're dealing with them.
The second is more technical: planter design and material guides for anyone specifying or purchasing at scale — fibreglass versus lightweight concrete, when a trough shape outperforms a round one, how to size a planter properly for a mature tree, what actually happens to a root system once it's container-bound long-term. If you're a landscape architect or designer putting planters on a drawing set, or a builder trying to work out what will actually survive a rooftop or a streetscape, this is the layer of detail that's often missing from product pages.
We've also have real project case studies — installations we've actually supplied, with the reasoning behind the material, size, and placement decisions, not just glossy after-photos.
None of it is written to sell you something first and inform you second. If a plant genuinely does better in the ground than in a pot, or a cheaper material will do the job just as well as a premium one, we'll say so — that's the only way this is actually useful to you, and it's the only way we'd want to read it ourselves.
